Carson City Salvation Army launches Red Kettle campaign Friday with open house, RSVP dinner
With contributions running in short supply, the Salvation Army in Carson City hopes to generate donor momentum going into the holidays with a community Kettle Kick off event this Friday, featuring an open house, and in the evening, a RSVP fundraising dinner.
The inaugural event with food, a silent auction and kettle competition will follow the all-day community open house scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The RSVP dinner with table competitions will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at the Salvation Army, 661 Colorado St.
“We have fallen short by several hundred on our turkey donations so far this year and have a need for more turkeys or monetary donations to buy turkeys to help all the food banks in the community.” said Lt. Mark Cyr, Carson City officer-in-charge. “It’s my hope that we all can take a moment to remember those who are less fortunate this season. Unemployment has dropped significantly in the past couple of years, but the amount of families that are living at or near poverty has increased and they can use a little help and hope from their neighbors.”
Donations of cash, check and credit card as well as non-perishable foods and turkeys will be accepted throughout the day. Donations can be made online by texting ringcarson (one word) to 41444 to receive a link or go to their web page: carsoncitysalarmy.org
To reserve a spot for the 5:30 p.m. dinner, call Jennifer Carboni at 775-887-9120, ext. 100.
The Salvation Army reaches Carson City and Douglas County and will serve more than 4000 individuals this holiday season with both Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for families and toys for children and gifts for shut in seniors as well. About the Red Kettle Campaign:
From its humble beginnings as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army Captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. Thousands of Salvation Army bell-ringers fan out across the country to ring bells and solicit donations to the iconic Red Kettles from holiday shoppers.
About The Salvation Army:
The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination since 1865. More than 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter for the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. About 82 cents of every dollar raised is used to support those services in more than 5,000 communities nationwide.
