Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Nov. 1

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 26 through Nov. 1, 2015. Due to Nevada Day events including a parade, Carson Street will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 31, from approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Numerous side streets connected to Carson Street will be impacted as well. Detours will be signed.

Division Street will be closed between Fifth Street and King Street during daytime hours Monday through Friday due to road construction. Detours will be signed.

Utility work will continue during daytime hours, Monday through Thursday, with flagger controlled traffic at the following locations:
— Mountain Street between Fleischmann Way and Long Street.
— Long Street between Mountain Street and Division Street.
— Division Street between John Street and Long Street. Local access only.
— Sierra Circle, Hillside Way, Miller Way, Pine View Way, and Lane Circle.

There will be intermittent lane closures on Oregon Street with flagger controlled traffic between Roop Street and Wright Way Monday through Friday, as work continues at the NDOT maintenance yard.

The intersection of Cochise Street and Overland Street, as well as Cochise Street between Overland Street and Roventini Way, will be closed to through traffic Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Detours will be signed.

Utility work will continue Monday through Thursday at the following locations:
Intermittent lane closures with flaggers on Washington Street between Ormsby Boulevard and Mountain Street.
Intermittent lane closures on Race Track Road between Bigelow Drive and Schulz Drive with flagger controlled traffic (Monday through Friday). The north shoulder of Snyder Avenue between Oak Street and Bigelow Drive.

There will be a lane closure on Hillview Drive between Clearview Drive and Appion Way on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue construction of drainage improvements on U.S. Highway 50 West between the two truck ramps (just west of U.S. 395 to Sierra Highlands Drive). There will be lane closures Monday through Friday, but the roadway will remain open to traffic in both directions.

Clear Creek Avenue remains closed to through traffic between Lynette Lane and Center Drive due to utility work. Detours are signed and the JAC bus stop on Clear Creek Avenue is temporarily relocated near the intersection of Frontage Road and Clear Creek Avenue.

Work on the construction of the Carson City Freeway continues. Please use caution in the areas around the construction site, particularly along S. Carson Street.

Around the Lake Tahoe Basin, Caltrans reports the following roadwork, Oct. 26-30:

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Fawn Street to Sequoia Avenue: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various location from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to noon Friday for highway and shoulder work and tree work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work is wrapping up on a $20 million water-quality project from 0.1 mile north of the Eagle Falls Sidehill Viaduct No. 5 in Emerald Bay to the Meeks Creek Bridge in Meeks Bay. This project is adding new drainage features, curb and gutter in some locations, and resurfacing a nearly 7-mile stretch of the highway. The project will be completed this fall.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 3 Ring Road to 1 Ring Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for drainage work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work is wrapping up on an $8 million project from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue in Tahoma, installing curb and gutter and drainage systems to collect and treat stormwater. The highway will also be resurfaced. The project will be completed this fall.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control around the clock from 7 p.m. Sunday to 11 a.m. Friday for highway construction.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway will be resurfaced. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from the “Y” intersection to 15th Street: Northbound and southbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work. Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from Spring Creek Road to Cascade Road from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for drainage work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. The project is installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Rubicon Drive/Carson Street to Tulare Avenue/Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday for gas line relocation work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Sugar Pine Road to Elizabeth Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control form 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for shoulder work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) at Alpine Meadows Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday for electrical work.

Federal regulations and Nevada state law prohibit political and advertising signage on public highway property, including but not limited to political signs, yard sale/event signs, and realtor or business signage.

It is important to know that state road property often extends beyond the roadside, fence line, or sidewalk of interstates, freeways, highways, and urban state roads/streets.

The application deadline for Mile High Band Association’s 2024 Jazz & Beyond Festival art contest is Friday, May 31. Northern Nevada artists, including teachers and students are invited to apply, and participation is free.

Selected entries in the competition will be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover. Festival T-shirts may also feature the winning design.

The Sierra Nevada section of the Society of Women Engineers recognized several Carson City students and one teacher at the 2024 Night of STEM Star Awards in Reno, Friday, April 26.

The honorees were recognized for displaying remarkable talent and commitment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). I usually whistle past the obituaries, but Larry Young caught my eye. He was a scientist who discovered Love Potion Number Nine. Yes, Larry unearthed a chemical that heightens desire, not that the world needs it. A drug that would diminish desire might do the world more good in the long run.

Today was a very productive day working in the yard. The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

Sunday in Carson City brought out a black bear with a shiny brown coat that lumbered through a yard in early morning light, probably looking for breakfast.

The 2nd annual Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival is returning May 17-19 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. This is a free community event that benefits the Center for Hope and Healing.

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.
