Carson City Sept. 11 memorial offers remembrance, prayers
Members of the Carson City community gathered Tuesday evening at the September 11 Memorial in Mills Park outside the Pavillion to remember those who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks and to offer prayers and hope.
Several pastors from local churches provided prayers and words of comfort in between speakers.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong spoke about the events of September 11, and noted the IHOP shooting that occurred on Sept. 6, 2011 in Carson City in which three Nevada Guardsman and a civilian died.
Some of the lessons learned out of Sept. 11, 2001 was how the public safety community had prepared for the 10 year anniversary, said Furlong. When the IHOP shooting happened, days before the 10th anniversary of 9-11, the mechanism for public safety automatically kicked in and law enforcement was able to put it into perspective quickly, he said.
Though it is hard in Carson City to separate Sept. 11, 2001 from the IHOP shooting, it is important to remember the victims of both who lost their lives tragically and for no senseless reason, said Furlong.
Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell spoke as well, and asked community members to remain vigilant, and to keep the memory of those lost alive in our hearts.
Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon was the final speaker, and told the story of New York City Fire Captain Patrick “Paddy” Brown, who was killed along with 11 members of his team after saving 2,500 civilians before the Twin Towers collapsed.
“What I ask of you,” said Slamon, addressing those gathered “is to pay kindness forward. Help a neighbor, say thank you, or tell someone how much they mean to you. Captain Paddy Brown deserves it, the American civilians and service members who lost their lives deserve it, and our current first responders deserve it. Because today is a day we remember, that any day could be our last, and we should show kindness as often as possible.”
