5 Questions for artists Adrian Landon and Morgan Craig of Carson City's Summer Artist Lecture Series
This Thursday, July 25, the second Free Artist Lecture for the Carson City Artist Lecture Series will take place at the Brick (The Community Development Building) located at 108 E. Proctor Street. This lecture will feature three artists in two lectures: Morgan Craig of Philadelphia, Adrian Landon and Ewelina Bochenska of New York, who will be presenting together.
The presentation begins at 5 p.m and will run until 6:30 p.m.
Morgan Craig is a Philadelphia-based painter who focuses on oil paintings on linen, and has been residing in the Resident Artist Program in Silver City.
Adrian Landon is currently in a residency with Buffalo Creek Art Center Inc. in Douglas County, and is working on a massive Pegasus statue for Burning Man.
Ewelina Bochenska will also be speaking during the lecture. Bochenska is a two-dimensional artist who uses a variety of mediums from oil, fabric, linen, leather, yarn, and more to create small artworks.
Five Questions for Adrian Landon:
1) How did you end up in a residency at Buffalo?
A resident at BCAC last year Carol Halle, who knew me from the art/sculpture community back in New York, specifically from the Art Student's League and Salem Art Works, recommended me to Steve the director. It was perfect timing as I was planning on making a large sculpture for Burning Man this year, Wings of Glory, and this has turned out to be the most ideal place to build it. It just fell into my lap, like a few other things in this crazy journey/project.
2) Have you learned anything new or progressed as an artist while here?
This is the largest and most complex project I have ever done, and there have been many new elements, the scale, the element of fire, fundraising, laser cutting metal, extensive planning and so on. My time at BCAC has been the execution time, the metal fabricating, welding and sculpting time. That part hasn't really changed much, even though it's a very different environment and circumstances.
3) Is there anything you've found particularly inspiring during your stay?
It's always inspiring to do a residency and to work alongside other artists, to see how they work, their perspectives and ideas.
4) You're here with your partner Ewelina Bochenska; does working as with another artist change the finished artwork?
Ewelina is also an artist and is doing her own thing. We are not working on Wings of Glory together. We are both very independent and don't really ever collaborate with other artists. On the other hand, I have been working closely with an engineer on my project, who is building the wings of the Pegasus and the fire element, but I am the primary artist of the project.
5) What are your next plans once your residency has finished?
Our residency ends once we set sail for Burning Man. Once that's over, we will take some rest (in our camper) and start looking for a property as we are planning to move to Nevada.

Five Questions for Morgan Craig:
1) How did you end up in a residency program with Silver City?
My initial interest in Silver City stemmed from a friend who had recommended the residency program.
2) What have you found to be most inspiring while you've been in our area?
I find the Nevada landscape quite captivating. The lambent quality at the crepuscule is rather riveting. I am also interested in the history of mining in the area, which has been the focus, during my stay. Both the edifices, and the impact it has had on the aforementioned landscape are of profund interest to me.
3) A lot of your paintings focus on abandoned buildings, rooms that have fallen into disrepair, etc.; what is it about this topic you find to be an important focus?
I wish for my work to act as a sociopolitical/socioeconomic commentary on the effects of hubris, avarice, free trade, outsourcing, deregulation, deterritorialization, neoliberalism, obsolescence, and international finance capital on communities throughout the world.
4) Did you discover a favorite place while in our area to paint?
No, no place in particular. I am a fan, however, of several of the mills that dot the landscape.
5) What are your next plans?
After leaving Silver City, I will be traveling across the pond to Africa, Zambia to be specific. I will be participating in a 3 week residency.
