Carson City Fire Department knocks down structure fire at North Carson Street restaurant

UPDATE: A Carson City Fire Department battalion chief on scene reports the fire was knocked down at 9:15 a.m.
Motorists can expect delays. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday morning to a structure fire in the 1600 block of North Carson Street.

The fully involved fire was reported at around 9 a.m. and is believed to have started inside a small restaurant, Antojitos La Jefa, which has been evacuated. Nearby apartments were also evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Carson City Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a small brush fire near the Mountain Street trailhead, in the area of 1300 Mountain Street near Fleischmann Way and West Long Street.

The fire was called into dispatch at 1:42 p.m. First responders on scene reported a small, 5-foot by 5-foot smoldering fire in the brush, possibly a warming fire. A battalion chief on scene reported the fire was extinguished at 1:51 p.m.

Casinos and gaming establishments in Carson City and Carson Valley saw gaming revenue increase 25.90 percent in July compared to July 2020, according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Fremont Elementary School has confirmed four cases of COVID-19 requiring approximately 20 percent of the student population to quarantine. The Dixie Fire burning west of Susanville is now 735,064 acres, an increase of 3,754 acres since Tuesday, with 45 percent containment, according to Cal Fire. Active fire behavior and smoke production remains predominantly on the northern and southeastern perimeters of the Dixie Fire.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office 18th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge will be held on Sept. 9, 10, and 11, 2021 at Mills Park. The event is open to current certified motor officers and advanced skilled riders. Motor officers will be training, riding, and discussing riding techniques with various motor instructors. This training event is designed to help motor officers enhance their riding skills through challenging skill patterns with camaraderie and some competition.

The Nevada DMV’s plan to pay back millions of collected $1 fees — charges declared unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court — is temporarily on ice after state lawmakers said they want additional buy-in on the plan.

A second complaint was filed against Bette Larsen, owner of Timbers Saloon in Carson City, by the Nevada Gaming Control Board earlier this month.

A 78-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of two counts misdemeanor domestic battery and harassment, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The Caldor Fire being fought in El Dorado County southwest of Lake Tahoe was mapped at 126,182 acres and was 11 percent contained as of Wednesday morning according to Cal Fire. Evacuation orders and warnings remained unchanged.

The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival continues tonight, Wednesday, with the Urban Renewal Project performing a free indoor concert from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Two Kindergarten classes have been excluded and have moved remote following one positive COVID-19 case at Fremont Elementary and two positive cases at Empire Elementary, according to Ann Cyr, Risk Manager for the Carson City School District.

Since school began again last Monday, Aug. 16, there have been approximately 35 positive cases from students in the Carson City School District.

The Dixie Fire burning near Susanville has been mapped at 731,310 acres and was 41 percent contained as of Tuesday, according to the U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened August 6, 2021 in Mineral County where a Hawthorne man and a 9-year-old girl were killed.

Carson City’s Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada is closed until Monday due to a COVID-19 exposure which, according to Executive Director Katie Leao, the club takes very seriously.

“We’re very strict,” said Leao. “We require masks, which we provide if kids don’t have them, we’re still cleaning and sanitizing every hour, and we sanitize and deep clean the building every night.”

A 54-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of sales and transport of a controlled substance, and third offense possession of a controlled substance, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is advising motorists to seek alternate routes as lane closures and major travel delays begin this Thursday, August 26 for resurfacing of approximately two miles of U.S. 50 between Asphalt Drive and Nichols Lane in eastern Carson City.

The Caldor Fire burning in El Dorado County continues to push northeast and remains several miles away from Lake Tahoe, prompting fire officials Monday to declare the fire a national priority.

Nevada State Parks has been continuously monitoring the Caldor Fire, currently burning southwest of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The fire has produced increasingly hazardous air quality for Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin. The air quality forecasts predict a continuation of these hazardous conditions through the upcoming week.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called Monday afternoon to a vehicle crash on I-580 near the US-50 East turnoff.
