Nevada Day announces 'Nevada Counties: 100 years' as theme for 2019
This year, Pershing County is celebrating its 100th birthday, becoming Nevada’s 17th and final county, and Nevada Day festivities in Carson City has been chosen as its Silver State celebration hub.
“We’re taking this opportunity to remind folks all around Nevada this is a statewide celebration,” said Ken Hamilton, Executive Director of Nevada Day. “Our goal is to get all the counties involved with the parade this year to help celebrate our statehood.”
Celebrating Nevada counties is not a new theme for Nevada Day; however, the last time it was chosen as the theme was in 1957, and the Nevada Day Committee thought it was time to bring the focus back to counties.
“During the last decade or so, a lot of the rural counties and southern counties haven’t participated,” said Hamilton. “We want to take this time to encourage them to get involved, and it’s an opportunity for us to learn how to make that happen.”
The goal for Nevada Day, said Hamilton, is not to have it focused solely on Northern Nevada, politicians, and local business owners, but instead to have it focus on Nevada as a whole. That’s why they’ve also asked each county to submit a page for the Nevada Day Program detailing what is significant about their county.
For a brief period of time beginning in 1987, Nevada did have an additional county called ‘Bullfrog County’ located within southern Nye County. Less than two years later, however, Nye County challenged legislation to create Bullfrog County, bringing an end to its short-lived life as Nevada’s 18th county.
Changes are coming to the parade as well, said Hamilton. Beginning this year, they’ve decided to scale back the amount of entries allowed in the parade, and the physical length each entry is allowed. This is to help streamline the event, as well as prevent clogging in the side streets where each float waits to enter the parade route.
“The side streets get too busy, and there’s not enough room,” said Hamilton. “Reducing the amount of entries and the physical length will help solve the issue.”
In previous years, between 200 and 225 entries were allowed; this year, the number has been scaled back to 185.
All new rules are detailed in the entry application, located on their website nevadaday.com
This year, the Nevada Day Parade and related festivities will be held on Saturday, October 26.
