WNC Softball: Wildcats make double header sweep Friday against Snow College

Western Nevada College Softball faced Snow College Friday for a doubleheader at Pete Livermore Sports Complex in Carson City. With the wind blowing out, home runs seemed to be in the cards, and the Wildcats were dealing them. In game one, WNC put four out of the park to come out on top of the Badgers, 12-6. Noa Talia blasted two home runs to help the Wildcats take the second game, 12-9.

Gabrielle Canibeyaz put the Wildcats on the board first with an in park homerun in the second inning. Snow's right fielder, AnnMarie Allred was injured while making the play, and required transport to the hospital by ambulance. 1-0 WNC.

In the third, Snow's bats came alive, and the Badgers put up three runs. WNC came on strong in response. Bailey Henderson doubled in the bottom of the inning, and scored on a single by Kacie Freudenberger. Briauna Carter singled, scoring Freudenberger and knotting the score, 3-3.

In the fourth, Dakota Robinson doubled, and Triniece Lesky slammed a home run, edging WNC ahead, 5-3. Makaylee Jaussi worked a walk, and Henderson homered. 7-3 Wildcats.

Badgers answered with three runs in the fifth. 7-6 WNC.

In the sixth, Lesky led off with a single, Jaussi drew a walk, and Henderson pounded another home run, making it 10-6, WNC. Carter then singled, and Talia put one out, 12-6, WNC. Canibeyaz kept the inning going with a single, but got out on a double play ball. Final score, 12-6 WNC.

Pitcher Kristina George went the distance in the circle for WNC. She allowed 10 hits, and struck out eight batters.

Coach Leah Wentworth said, "Offensively, we've been climbing and settling in. This is the first day I've seen them execute a solid game at the plate."

"We've faced this pitcher before, and knew what to expect. We were able to be more effective at the plate and were able to take more aggressive cuts. I'm proud of how we are improving with each outing."

George continued her run in the circle to start the second game. The Wildcats kept the momentum up, scoring in the first inning, when Jaussi walked, Melanie Mecham doubled and Freudenberger doubled to score the runners. Canibeyaz singled to score Freudenberger. 3-0, Wildcats.

Snow scored one in the second, but WNC answered, padding their lead. Lesky walked and Jaussi singled. A single by Henderson scored the runners. Mecham singled, and Carter and Freudenberger drew walks to load the bases. Talia singled, scoring Mecham and Freudenberger and prompting a pitching change for Snow. The Badgers were able to shut down the inning, 7-1 WNC.

Snow scored two runs in the third. McKell Marble relieved George in the circle. At the bottom of the inning, Jaussi singled for the 'Cats, but was left stranded. 7-3, WNC.

In the bottom of the fourth, Freudenberger walked, Carter singled, and Talia homered, making it 10-3, Wildcats.

Snow knocked back-to-back homers in the fifth, narrowing the Wildcats' lead to 10-5. Kaitlyn Jimmy took over for Marble. Wildcat Talia hit a second home run for the game, third for the day, which scored Carter, who had reached on an error. 12-5, WNC.

The Wildcats allowed Snow to score two more in sixth, and two in the seventh, but it wasn't enough. Final score 12-9, WNC. The three Wildcat pitchers combined for seven strike outs in the game.

Games continue Saturday, at noon and 2 at Pete Livermore Sports Complex. Before the games, two Wildcats will sign to play at four-year colleges next year, and sophomore players will be honored in between games.
