Senator Square: Tuesday is ACT test for juniors; Cinderella Ball a huge smash

On Tuesday, only Juniors will be attending class at Carson High School. The state mandated ACT test will be given during the day for juniors. Freshmen, sophomores and seniors get the day off. However, proficiencies will also be given that day to some seniors.

Seniors that need to take proficiencies have been notified by the school. School is in normal session the rest of the days of the week, including Monday which was originally scheduled to be an early release. Due to the day off on Tuesdays for everyone but juniors, Monday is now a regular class day with no early release. If you have questions, please contact the attendance office at 283-1910.

Cinderella Ball a Hit
The first ever Father/Daughter Ball was held this past week at Carson High School. The event was a huge success for its first year with over 600 dads and daughters attending. Proceeds from the event benefitted for different student clubs at CHS. The community wide event was open to all ages of girls and fathers. We want to thank junior students Paris Regan and Ben Ray who spent the evening dressed as Cinderella and Prince Charming and delighted all the little girls at the dance. It was a magical evening and because of its success, the event will be an annual event.

National History Day
CHS students that qualified at the state competition for the Nationals of National History Day to be held in June in Baltimore, Maryland are busy fundraising for their travel. You can help by eating out at BJ’s Restaurant in south Reno on April 28 from 4 to 10 PM. You must present a flyer to your server so that they know you are dining to help the kids raise money. BJ’s will then donate 15 percent of total food sales back to the students. History Teacher Nominated for National Award
National History Day announced that Nicole Fagundes was nominated to receive the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award. Nominees have shown outstanding creativity, commitment, and inspiration in developing student interest in history. Each state winner is awarded $500, and is eligible for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award.

Two national winners, announced on June 18, 2015, will receive $10,000 in recognition of their outstanding efforts. Fagundes, CHS world history teacher is one of only two winners from the state. Middle and high school teachers are nominated by their administrators, peers, or themselves for the award. Each participating state is allowed to select one high school and one middle school teacher to receive the state award and consideration for the national award. “National History Day firmly believes that quality teachers are the best educational tools that students have,” said National History Day Executive Director Cathy Gorn.

“The teachers selected as Behring award recipients are a credit to their discipline, and exemplify what it takes to be a quality educator.” Congratulations to Ms. Fagundes. CHS is lucky to have you on our staff and teaching our students.

NHS Blood Drive
National Honor Society students will be holding their annual spring blood drive on Wednesday, April 29 at the high school. Please contact their advisor Mrs. Glenn to make an appointment at eglenn@carson.k12.nv.us.

Senior Spotlight
The spotlight this week is on Adela Bracamontes. Adela has taken many challenging AP and honors classes throughout high school and currently holds a weighted grade point average of 3.86. Adela spent a year in FBLA and has earned academic letters for her achievements. She is also fluent in two languages.
Adela has held a couple of part time jobs in the fast food industry around Carson City the past two years while attending high school. She enjoys cooking and baking in her free time. She is currently putting in hours on how to maintain automobiles by learning to do oil changes, change tires and do tune-ups.

Adela plans on attending WNC next year to become a nurse. She would love to work in a doctor’s office as an assistant or possibly become a nurse practitioner. We are proud of Adela and her accomplishments and wish her all the best.
