WNC Professor Howarth to address future of robots in the workplace and in our lives
With all the emphasis on teaching robotics in the schools, one wonders what will become of those of us who are less than science or mathematically gifted.
Robots already permeate our lives at almost every turn and each day brings new revelations about how robots are taking over the once hum-drum jobs humans no longer wish to perform — or manufacturers no longer wish to pay humans the salaries and benefits it takes to manufacture a widget.
Robots are part of the surgical team allowing for less invasive surgery. Nursing robots will take your blood pressure and dispense your pill when you are in the hospital. Robots will soon be cooking your burgers and preparing your salad. Elon Musk recently purchased a company that will transfer data between the human mind and the robotic “mind.”
As soon as the bugs are worked out of self-driving cars, expect to see those on our road. You’ll finally be able to text and check your email while the car drives you to the programmed destination. No tickets for that!
With the advent of the computers that become smarter every day, expect to see much more in the way of “smart” gadgets to record your every move.
We loved the Star Wars character R2D2, will be love our robots? Robots will be only as safe as those who program them. Will there be a code of ethics to assure the future is not in the hands of the programmers who program the robots?
Western Nevada College Professor of Electrons and Industrial Technology, Emily Howarth, will address these thought-provoking issues and more as she addresses the Carson City Chamber Soup’s On! luncheon Tuesday, April 25, 11:15 a.m. at Gold Dust West.
The public is invited to listen to Ms. Howarth who is currently busily training those with STEM capabilities the art of robotics. She is a CyberPatriot Mentor and has received the 2015 Nevada System of Higher Education Regents Teaching Award.
Those who wish to attend this thought-provoking luncheon must contact the Chamber before April 24 at 882-1565 to reserve a seat. Cost is $16 and includes lunch.
