Carson City arrests: Man who ran 'out of his shoes' during pursuit arrested on drug charges

A Dayton man was arrested Monday for multiple felony drug offenses following a brief pursuit in which he apparently lost his shoes, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Austin Mordhorst was arrested at around 10 p.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street for possession of a controlled substance for sale, two counts possession of a controlled substance and the following misdemeanors: Three counts possession of drug paraphernalia, jaywalking, a failure to appear in traffic court warrant and obstructing an officer.

According to the arrest report a deputy was alerted to a man in the area who had an active warrant for his arrest. Two days prior the man ran from a deputy who had attempted to make contact with him.

This time a deputy located Mordhorst jaywalking across Retail Drive. The deputy attempted to make contact and asked the man to stop walking and talk to him. The suspect replied no and dropped items in his hands. Then Mordhorst "ran out of his shoes" going west toward Roop Street and then to the south side of the backside of Walmart, according to the arrest report.

Officers searched the field between Walmart and Northridge where the suspect was eventually located in a gated area of sagebrush on the backside of Walmart near a house. He was ordered not to move and was handcuffed and taken into custody.

When he stood up the arresting officer saw a scale commonly associated with selling narcotics. The scale was powered on, showing bright lights and numbers. The scale had residue on it with what appeared to be methamphetamine, the arrest report states.

The arresting officer then walked the path where the man had been running and located a black bag with a clear plastic bag hanging out of it. The clear plastic bag had several small plastic baggies, consistent with selling narcotics, the arrest report states. The deputy opened a baggie and located methamphetamine inside. He was taken to jail and booked. Located on him was a piece of aluminum foil containing heroin residue. The total bail amounted listed was $14,508.

Herschbach was arrested for suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, a sergeant with the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team attempted to make a traffic stop after observing a traffic violation.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle with flashing lights and siren activated. The vehicle failed to yield, going through stop signs and not using turn signals while driving eastbound on William Street west of Stewart Street. It appeared the driver was intentionally delaying the stop, the report states.

The vehicle finally stopped on Washington Street near Plaza. The driver, Cook, was detained. A drug detection K9, Ivo, did an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive to the presences of drugs. The vehicle was searched where a plastic vial with methamphetamine was located inside a baggie, the arrest report states.

Both men were read their Miranda warning and both stated they understood. Cook denied knowing there were drugs in the vehicle at the time and stated the reason why he didn't stop was that he was looking for a "safe location."

However, the police report notes he passed three driveway entrances and there was minimal traffic which would have not hindered him yielding, the arrest report states. Cook has a no bail hold for parole and probation violation. Bail for Herschbach: $6,137.

According to the arrest report, a deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle after having observed a right rear tail light illuminating white instead of red.

The officer attempted to make contact with the driver and asked him to roll down his window. The driver did not. The officer knocked on the window and requested he roll down the window, which he did. He informed the driver the reason for the traffic stop. The man said he was coming back from a party. The officer asked if he had consumed any alcohol at the party. The man stated he did not.

While speaking the officer could smell a mild odor of alcohol coming from his breath. He was asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests. The man said he would. Deputies observed clues of impairment on two of the tests. The man submitted to a preliminary breath test. He blew a .066.

She said she fell to the ground and could feel her nose bleed. She said the man left the residence. He was located at another residence and appeared to be hiding.

He was read his Miranda warning and agreed to speak. He told the deputy that he and his girlfriend got into an argument. He told deputies that as the woman attempted to exit the bathroom, she ran into his hand.

He stated he never hit the woman and the bloody nose was a result of her running into his hand. He was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery.

During a search of the man, a deputy located a vial of what appeared to be methamphetamine in the man's front right pocket. He was asked what it was and the man stated it was methamphetamine.

Galias is also on alternative sentencing and to also arrest him for violation of a suspended sentence. Bail: $6,500.
