Capital Ford fundraiser for Carson High baseball team poised to raise $6,000

When it comes to quality being job one, Dick Campagni's Capital Ford in Carson City wants the Carson High School boys baseball team to have all the equipment it needs to make it a winning season.

That's why the Carson City-based Ford dealership held a fundraiser today and is confident it will have raised $6,000 for the baseball team by the end of the day. Proceeds will go to pay for the team's equipment needs.

Dick Campagni's Capital Ford raised the money by moving a portion of its showroom — 18 cars, trucks and SUVs — to the Carson High parking lot. Within hours potential car buyers walked through the lot, chose models that they wanted to test drive, and did. Each test drive amounted to $20 that would go toward the baseball team.

By 10 a.m. more than 100 people had already taken their test drives. By 2 p.m. there were 263 test drives and organizers were confident they were on their way to hitting the 300 test-drive benchmark by the end of the event.

"This is something we wanted to do for our community and our kids. With all the budget cuts going on, it is getting tougher and tougher," said Tim Milligan, general manager of Capital Ford, located at 3660 South Carson St. in Carson City. "Everyone here from Capital Ford is donating their time to help the kids."

The fundraiser, which is part of the Drive One 4 UR School program that Ford offers nationwide, continues through 5 p.m. Saturday.

With all the 2010 Ford models in the Carson High School parking lot to choose from for test drives, Bill and Will Feltner of Carson City decided to take a cruise in a new 2010 Ford Mustang.

The drive was smooth, it had a nice pick up and the engine purred beautifully, said Bill Feltner. While he isn't quite ready to make the investment, he does like the way the new Mustangs retain a lot of the old model Mustang mystique.

"It's has a really nice retro style to it," he said.

Meanwhile Robert L. Theiss of Carson City, a retired watchmaker, dropped by to take a ride in the 2010 Fusion model, which he said "handles real nice."

"I drive a Ford Taurus and I've been happy with it. I'm not quite ready to give it up yet," Theiss said. "I'm here because of the baseball team. These kids need to have the best equipment and I am here to help."

For Charles Harnar of Carson City, the Ford Mustang is something that he wanted to test drive for a while. With a couple of rounds around the block, Harnar came back satisfied.

"It handled great," he said. "I've been wanting a Mustang for a while. When I do decide to do it, it will probably be a Mustang."

The response from the community for the event has been overwhelming, said Milligan.

"We are proud to be a part of this community and it was great to see the community come out and support this worthy event," Milligan said.

In October 2009 Dick Campagni's Capital Ford raised $6,000 for the Carson High girls basketball team.
