Wet weekend ahead for greater Carson City area
Residents of Carson City and surrounding communities are waking up Saturday morning to a rain and snow mix with temperatures in the 30s.
We can expect wet conditions throughout the weekend, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports, with 100 percent chance of showers Saturday and a high temperature into the mid-40s.
The chance of precipitation tapers off to 50 percent overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, dropping further 40 percent during the day and again 20 percent Sunday night. Highs Sunday are expected to reach into the upper 40s near 50 degrees.
Overnight lows this weekend will only drop in the low to mid-30s.
The start of the work week is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high of around 50 degrees as the weekend front moves on.
The NWS has issued a Winter weather advisory concerning upper elevations where conditions could impact travel:
"A slight lowering of total snowfall below 6500 feet with periods of heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches lower elevations including Truckee, Tahoe, and Highway 395 in Mono County. Accumulations of 12 to 20 inches above 7000 feet in the Tahoe region including highway passes, and above 8000 feet in Mono County. Ridge winds could gust as high as 75 mph."
The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.
"Travel could be very difficult. Check with NDOT and CalTrans for current road conditions. Snow accumulations below 6500 feet will occur primarily in heavier bursts of snow today.
"A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5-1-1."
