Carson City weather: Moderate winter storm potential late Saturday into Sunday
Though not a warm atmospheric river system, the first storm of March will impact the Carson City region and Sierra this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong winds will develop Saturday with widespread snowfall Saturday evening into Sunday morning. This includes not only the Sierra but also the valley floors from Reno to Carson City, Dayton, Virginia City to Carson Valley, according to the weather service. Snow showers will continue on and off during the rest of Sunday.
Strong winds Saturday will create hazardous travel on wind prone roadways, and could result in localized tree and fence damage and power outages. Since the heaviest snows will likely fall at night Saturday into Sunday, expect snow covered roadways and travel disruptions including on Interstate 80 and Highway 395. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly once the snow begins.
Forecast confidence is high in seeing snow accumulations across western Nevada from this storm. However confidence is lower in exact snowfall amounts, which could range from just an inch or so to upwards of 3 to 6 inches.
The weather services advises motorists to get their travel plans done by midday to sundown on Saturday or wait until after the snow leaves the area Sunday afternoon.
