Carson City Library installs automated materials handler, keeping health and safety a priority
The Carson City Library opened this week following the building’s closure to the public over the last few months. While closed, the library made great strides to ensure access while keeping in mind public safety including the installation of an automated book return and sorting system.
The Automated Materials Handler (AMH), developed by Lyngsoe Systems, offers a high-quality, touchless service for staff and the public to effortlessly and quickly return materials by minimizing the number of touches through automated solutions.
“Over the last year, we’ve all be thinking differently about health and safety and this is just another method we’ve implemented that supports our patrons and staff to help overcome concerns,” said Tod Colegrove, Carson City Library Director. “By implementing the automated handler, human contact is reduced, hygiene is improved and the physical stress of lifting materials is minimized for our staff.”
The AMH is height-adjustable, which enables library staff to remove materials from the sorting system while standing upright and reducing back pain. The new system also moves noticeably faster, requires less prompting from the user, has one additional chute for further refinement in sorting, features expandable bins and improved materials that are more durable than the library’s previous AMH.
The upgrade was made possible through CARES (Coronavirus Relief Funds) funding through Carson City to support the community to safely access library materials and create a healthier working environment for the library’s staff.
