What Works: Your patterns are trying to tell you something
Ok. So, I am a bit early for Groundhog Day. But, if you read this column, maybe your can crack the code to one of your patterns by then. A life pattern is nothing more than a message for you to pay attention to. I will give you an example from my own life.
I have been laid off from 85 percent of the full-time positions I have held. In the larger companies, that means corporate buy out and my position was eliminated. In smaller companies, it was based on resource allocation.
I used to have quite the “woe is me” attitude about this. I would secure a great position at a killer salary and one day, poof! I felt very unlucky. But it wasn’t luck. It was a message.
First, I was negotiating a high salary. I had the experience to demand it. So, why not negotiate high? Why not get the stock options? Why not negotiate the extra vacation? I am worth it.
Second, I was (and still am) very good at creating change quickly. I would automate things. I would add new revenue streams. I would change staffing, removing the need for tactical execution at the Director level. In a smaller company, that removed the need for my position. Operations or sales could take on the function. At a larger company, it became purely a numbers game.
Knowing the only thing on this planet I could control is myself (and my agreements) I asked myself this question. What role creates change quickly and can still command a good rate of pay? My answer was coach and consultant. That’s why I marched myself down to the Secretary of State after my last layoff and restarted my firm.
People ask me all the time, “Diane, how come you don’t let the world get you down?”
Let me give you a statement that will help you claim your own power.
We act on the world. The world does not act on us.
That’s right! YOU control you. Therefore, your world responds to your intentions and choices.
Here’s how to crack the code to your patterns.
Step #1: What IS the pattern? Identify the pattern and you can take the steps to understand it.
Step #2: What are the traits that are common every time this pattern repeats itself? When you identify and understand the traits, then you can start asking questions about what you can control.
Step #3: What is it within me that can control this? What can I do differently? Choose one variable and test it the next time your pattern pops up.
Remember, YOU act on the world. The world does not act on YOU! If you want to inspire someone, share this article on social media. Comment below with your questions and progress. Have a great week, Carson City!
