Road controls accompany new snowfall in Carson City Saturday morning
A light snow began falling early Saturday morning in Carson City, resulting in road controls around the area.
Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 50 West near Spooner Summit at the Carson City line to 7.5 miles on the downgrade into town, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reports.
Traction tires or devices are also required on Highway 50 West in Douglas County along the shore of Lake Tahoe for about a five-mile stretch from mile post 9.5 to mile post 14.6, NDOT said.
Highway 50 East in central Lyon County, from mile post 18.5 to mile post 29.4, is also requiring chains or snow tires, according to NDOT.
Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate in Washoe County has chains or snow tires required from the Bowers interchange at Interstate 580 to the Mount Rose Junction in Nevada.
Chains or snow tires are required on I-580 through Washoe Valley from a half-mile north of the Washoe County line to 6.5 miles north toward Reno.
Traction tires or devices are required on U.S. Highway 395 South in Douglas County from mile post 12.1 to mile post 16.3, NDOT reports.
Chains or snow tires are required on State Route 341 for about six miles, as well as about for about 11 miles between Lyon and Storey counties on the east end of 341.
About 19 miles of SR 431 up the Mount Rose Highway have chains or snow tires required, too.
Snow is in the forecast for the Carson City area until about 10 a.m. this morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports. Freezing rain is also possible until 1 p.m. Saturday before precipitation turns to rain.
Snow accumulation is forecast to be less than an inch in Carson City, according to the NWS, before turning to rain Saturday.
Carson City is forecast to reach a high of 40 degrees Saturday with a 100 percent chance of precipitation.
A regional flood warning remains in effect for all of Northwestern Nevada, including Carson City and surrounding rural counties.
The NWS forecasts the overnight temperature to actually rise early Sunday morning, reaching 49 degrees by 4 a.m. Rain is forecast to be heaviest Sunday as the atmospheric river approaching from over the Sierra Nevada settles into the area.
Expect conditions to be rainy and breezy Sunday with gusts to 35 miles per hour (mph) and sustained winds from the southwest 15-20 mph.
The overnight low Sunday will be above freezing at 37 degrees. Temperatures are expected to remain in the forties for highs through Tuesday and overnight lows in the low thirties.
A chance of rain of 60 percent or greater is also forecast through Tuesday, the NWS reports.
