Nationally renowned climate scientist to keynote Tahoe meteorologist conference
Ken Caldeira, a leading climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University, who attended the recent Paris Climate Conference, will be the keynote speaker Friday at Tahoe South’s Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference.
California State Sen. Pro Tem Kevin de León was originally scheduled to present but canceled due to an obligation out of the country. The conference begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday. The Friday keynote address is open to the public.
Caldeira, a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on Climate Change 2013, will discuss the expected impacts from the recent Paris Climate Conference. Caldeira was also the lead author of the oceans chapter for the 2005 IPCC report on Carbon Capture and Storage.
Alexander (Sasha) Gershunov, Research Meteorologist for Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will also speak about this year’s El Niño phenomenon on Friday.
Gershunov is affiliated with the Climate Education Partners (a National Science Foundation-funded San Diego-focused activity), NOAA’s California and Nevada Climate Applications Program, Department of the Interior’s Southwest Climate Science Center, and with the Center for Water and Weather Extremes (CW3E) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Operation Sierra Storm is a leading national weather conference sponsored by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. The conference includes television meteorologists broadcasting live from the event’s host ski resort Heavenly Mountain Resort.

The National Weather Service endorsed conference at Tahoe South will also feature hurricane monitoring and forecasting addressed in a presentation Chris Landsea, Ph.D. of NOAA’s National Hurricane Center; Dr. Thomas Painter, research scientist in the Water and Carbon Cycles Group; as well as a discussion on TV career planning with Peter Jacobus, a leading national TV consultant and strategist. Paul Goodloe from The Weather Channel will be broadcasting live from 6-9 a.m. PST on Saturday, Jan. 9, as well as other major markets including Chicago, Boston, Sacramento, Charlotte, Dallas, Boise, San Francisco and Miami during the conference.
