Trash Mob to remove Bull Thistle this Saturday at Horse Creek Ranch
The Trash Mob has been going strong for more than a year now. Through the efforts of volunteers, and their partners at the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department, Muscle Powered has removed thousands of pounds of garbage from local trails and walkways. With an eye towards improving the overall community and environment in the Carson City area, the Trash Mob is holding a very special and limited event this month.
The city manages a conservation easement on Horse Creek Ranch. Not only is this area rich in history, with Neil’s Flume being more than 100 years old, it also is on private property which means very few people ever get to experience the beauty of the ranch land.
A few months ago, representatives from Open Space approached Muscle Powered with an idea of holding a special Trash Mob at the site. Instead of removing trash, the volunteers would be removing bull-thistle weeds from the easement. This non-native invasive weed competes with the native plant species, depriving them of moisture and nutrients.
This Saturday, July 16th Muscle Powered and Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space will hold a special Trash Mob to remove bull thistle from the Horse Creek Ranch easement. Because bull thistle has needle-like spines, all volunteers participating in the event will be required to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed toed shoes. Heavy gloves will be provided by Muscle Powered at the event as well.
Due to the logistics of transporting the volunteers, participation in this special Trash Mob is limited to only 15 volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should click on the link at the end of this article to sign up and ensure their spot. The details regarding the meeting location and schedule are found on the SignUp.com website. Please note this month’s Trash Mob is longer than the regular 1 hour. Volunteers will meet at 8am and are expected to return to their vehicles by noon.
