Virginia City tales told at special museum event with Ron and Susan James Jan. 22
Nevada writers Ron and Susan James bring stories from their latest book “A Short History of Virginia City” to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.
Engaging speakers and experts in the state’s heritage, the couple will share historic Nevada tales of mining and the Old West. Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.
The community was founded in 1859 and over the years became world famous for gold, silver, Mark Twain and the Hollywood television show “Bonanza.” The 1960s brought bohemian artists and psychedelic rock to the famous saloons along the town’s core, which still lives today as a home to residents and businesses, and is an attraction to tourists from around the world.
Early arrival is recommended as space is limited. The presentation is part of the Frances Humphrey lecture series held at the museum on the fourth Thursday of every month, shedding new light on the state’s stories. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger.
The program is included with regular admission. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Contact Deborah Stevenson dstevenson@nevadaculture.org or (775) 687-4810, ext. 237.
