Carson City’s Ron Wood Family Resource Center is hosting a food drive today, Friday October 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Nevada State Legislature.

All donations will be used for Ron Wood’s food bank.

In Reno, a similar food drive will be held outside Representative Mark Amodei’s office at 5310 Kietzke Lane, and those donations will go to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Gov. Joe Lombardo has said that the Trump Administration told states they cannot fund SNAP cards themselves (although other states such as Virginia have been able to) but provided a “fact sheet” on how Nevadans can get help:

Are you unable to help out today at these food drives, but still want to help? At the bottom of the following story, we have a list of non-profits that are ready to accept whatever donations you may be willing to provide!

What’s happening with SNAP today?

A judicial hearing is occurring today in Boston, Mass. on a legal challenge filed by Democratic officials from 25 states (including Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford) arguing against the claim that SNAP cannot be funded during the shutdown.

SNAP has existed in the US for 61 years and has never missed payments during government shutdowns beforehand, which is what officials are using as precedent to fight the refusal.

According to WCVB, a Boston news outlet, the judge is leaning towards siding with states.

Here in Nevada, the Interim Finance Committee met yesterday and approved $30 million in funding for local food banks, and $200,000 to the National Guard to help with boxing and distributing food across the state.
