The Leisure Hour Club, Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization, launches its 129th year with its dinner meeting on Thursday, September 18. The evening will feature award-winning author and historian Mark McLaughlin, who will take attendees on a journey through the Tahoe Sierra’s most legendary winters.

Historian Mark McLaughlin

Using his book, Snowbound! as a guide, McLaughlin will share compelling stories of the battles against blizzards and deadly avalanches. His fast-paced presentation will highlight the daring efforts of railroad crews, highway workers, and volunteers who fought to keep the mountain passes open during historic storms.

A local of North Lake Tahoe since 1978, McLaughlin has earned five Nevada State Press Awards. His expertise has led to on-camera appearances on CNN, The History Channel, The Weather Channel, and the BBC. He is a prolific author with seven books and over 1,000 articles published, but he says his true passion is sharing Sierra history in person.

Established in 1896, the Leisure Hour Club promotes knowledge in important issues, science, music, and literature. Its motto, “Let knowledge grow from more and more,” is inspired by Tennyson’s poem, In Memoriam.

New members are welcome to join the club for annual dues of $25. The dues will cover the cost of the September dinner for anyone who joins or renews at the meeting. Reservations for the dinner and meeting are required by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. To reserve a spot, call 775.302.8820 or email lhcreservations@gmail.com.
