
While the heavy rain weather forecasters anticipated over the weekend failed to arrive, windy conditions did and will arrive again Tuesday ahead of a storm system that extends into Wednesday and Thursday that may bring some light rain and possible snow showers to the Carson City and Sierra regions.
After a warm and dry Monday, additional storm systems producing strong gusty winds and lighter amounts of rain and snow are expected at times Tuesday through Thursday. Much colder temperatures are expected Thursday, then dry weather with a warming trend returns into next weekend. Another storm system may bring cooler and wetter conditions early next week.
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory beginning Tuesday morning for much of the region, including the greater Reno, Storey County, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Carson Valley, and Lyon County regions.
Winds increase Tuesday afternoon and early Tuesday evening, then decrease briefly during the late evening and into early Wednesday morning. The winds increase again Wednesday afternoon and continue into the evening.
West to southwest 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph. Stronger gusts to near 60 mph are likely in wind prone areas along the Highway 395 corridor from Susanville through Reno and Carson City, east along Highway 50 through Silver Springs, and along and just east of Highway 95.
Hazardous cross-wind conditions, especially for high profile vehicles, may result in loss of vehicle control. Semi trucks will be in danger of tipping over in wind prone locations. Travel restrictions are likely for high profile vehicles, according to the weather service.
Localized tree, fence damage is possible. The weather service advises that now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. It’s always a good idea to bring in the small dogs.
