Strong gusty winds are expected to arrive ahead of a winter weather system by Thursday prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning for the Carson City region and a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.

Higher elevations in the Sierra could see as much as a foot of snow from the system with the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee seeing anywhere from 2 to 6 inches. Around Carson City, the system will bring rain Thursday and with possible snow by Thursday night into early Friday morning. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

The wind will be a factor with the latest system. Strong gusty southerly winds will develop by mid-morning Thursday in the foothills and over ridges. Winds will be from 25 mph to 45 mph with gusts to 65 mph. A few gusts between 80 and 85 mph are possible. This wind area includes Minden, Gardnerville, Washoe Vally and much of Reno and Sparks.

It may be a good idea to secure the holiday outdoor ornaments before the onset of strong winds. It’s also a good idea to bring the small dogs inside. The High Wind Warning runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

At Lake Tahoe, boaters are advised not to take their watercraft out on the lake as waves are expected to be between 3 to 5 feet. Winds gusts will be as high as 50 mph with ridge gusts 90 to 115 mph.
