The Salvation Army

The biggest fundraising season for The Salvation Army is in trouble. The nonprofit raises the majority of its funding between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But this year, fewer donations and fewer people signing up to volunteer to ring bells at kettles has put The Salvation Army way behind in fundraising.
With only 10 days left in the giving season, The Del Oro Division, which includes Northern California and Northern Nevada, is only about halfway to its $2 million fundraising goal. Local fundraising totals are available upon request.
“Failing to meet our goal could mean cutting back on some of the programs and much-needed services we provide, and that would hurt those who are most vulnerable in our community,” said Major John Brackenbury, Salvation Army Del Oro Divisional Commander. “We are calling on our neighbors who have the means to help to look into their hearts and their wallets for something extra to give. We have no doubt that our donors will come through. They continue to bless those in need with their kindness and generosity.”
Money collected in red kettles doesn’t just help people during Christmastime. That money helps support Salvation Army programs all year long. Across the Del Oro Division, The Salvation Army provides a breadth of services, including emergency disaster services, shelter, transitional living, adult rehabilitation services, food, rent and utility assistance, and programs for children and seniors.
The Salvation Army is now asking for the community’s help keeping those programs running so it can continue serving those less fortunate. If you see a red kettle, you can donate change, cash or checks. You can also donate with your smartphone at every kettle site using Kettle Pay, which accepts Google and Apple pay, Venmo and PayPal. You can also donate online at VirtualRedKettle.org.
Those interested in giving their time can volunteer. There are many volunteer opportunities available all across the California and Nevada. To find a volunteer opportunity that fits with your schedule, go to volunteer.usawest.org and sign up today.
