Carson City Host Lions Club is well-known for its work in vision preservation, from holding vision screenings for children and recycling eyeglasses, to picking up the tab for eye exams and eyeglasses for those Carson City residents who cannot afford them.

The way the Club supports vision preservation efforts, as well as its many humanitarian and youth projects, is through fundraisers.  Currently Club members are raising funds by selling See’s Candies and candies from the local Chocolate Nugget Factory.  The Club invites the public to help support vision preservation and other humanitarian projects, by stopping by the candy booth at the Carson Mall, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; or the Candy Trailer located at Fuji Park across from the Costco entrance on Old Clear Creek Road, open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.  The locations will be open until December 24th or until supplies run out.  Club members will be able to help shoppers select from a wide variety of candies with prices to suit every budget.

The local Lions Club annually helps about 70 residents with obtaining eye exams and glasses.  They also help with the cost of more serious surgeries by picking up patient travel costs to the Lions Eye Foundation Institute in San Francisco, California.  The Carson City Host Club is also a dues-paying member of the Lions Eye Foundation, which covers the cost of the surgeries and/or treatment.

This fall, the Carson City Host Lions, along with the Dayton Valley Lions, were invited by the Carson City School District to perform vision screening for about 1700 students in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades, in cooperation with school nurses.  Screenings started in September and were completed on November 22nd.  Mobile vision screening equipment owned by the Lions was used to conduct the screenings. Screening results showed about 30% of the students should be referred to eye care professionals for further testing and care.   School nurses will contact parents of those students who received referrals to explain the results.
