The Lions of District 46, comprised of 47 Lions clubs in Nevada and California, are pleased to announce that Mathew Ma of Las Vegas, has won the District 46 competition in the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest.
This global competition invites children aged 11 to 13 to creatively express their visions of peace. This year’s theme was “Peace Without Limits.”
Mathew, a 13-year-old seventh grader at Coral Academy of Science in Las Vegas and the son of G. Lin, reflected on his artwork. “If people live life in peace and happiness throughout the world, then harmony will increase.” He was sponsored by the Las Vegas Breakfasters Lions Club.
Mathew will receive a $125 award and an opportunity to compete in the international contest. The International Grand Prize Winner will be awarded a trip to an award ceremony, where he/she will receive $5,000. Twenty-three merit award winners will also be selected, each receiving $500.
Connor Chang of Las Vegas secured second place at the Nevada/California District level. He is a seventh grader at Sig Rogich Middle School in Las Vegas, and was sponsored by the Las Vegas Host Club. He is the son of Sarah Chang.
Honorable mention went to Oriah Land, a student at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City. She was sponsored by the Carson City Host Lions Club. She is the daughter of Shaona Land.
Terry Rubald, the District 46 Peace Poster Contest chairperson, highlighted the support from Lions Clubs across Nevada, including the Boulder City Lions Club; Carson City Host Lions Club, Las Vegas Host Lions Club, Las Vegas Professionals Lions Club; Las Vegas Breakfasters Lions Club; and Spring Valley Lions Club. The entries were on display for about two weeks in November and December at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in Carson City.
On behalf of District 46 Lions, she also thanked the three people who served as judges: Rachel Stiff, Professor of Art at Western Nevada College; Redale Baker, a local artist in Carson City; and Kristy Dial, President of the Nevada Artists Association.
Lions Clubs International is a global leader in community and humanitarian service. The International organization works to improve health and well-being, supports those in need through humanitarian services and grants that impact lives globally, and encourages peace and international understanding.
