
Breezy to gusty winds are expected Saturday afternoon followed by unsettled and stormy conditions that may move into the Carson City region overnight bringing a chance of snow by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
The fast moving storm is expected to take on some characteristics of a what forecasters call an “Inside Slider.” Therefore, precipitation chances are increasing and it is possible for and inch or two of accumulation down to western Nevada valley floors, according to the weather service.
For Saturday, winds will increase, 15 to 25 mph with gusts between 35 to 50 mph into the night, switching to west northwest and diminishing some on Sunday.
Light snow for the Sierra could start late Saturday afternoon, continuing into Sunday. Period of light snow for Carson City and western Nevada valleys may happened later Saturday night into Sunday morning with scattered snow showers and lake effect snow continuing Sunday.
NWS forecasters say they have high confidence for the windy conditions and medium confidence for snow down to the valley floors.
For the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, the weather service says there’s a 50 percent chance of rain mixed with snow showers Sunday. Generally 1 to 3 inches is the maximum snow expected with higher amounts possible in the Sierra.
The weather service advises people to prepare for these conditions by securing outdoor decorations and plan extra time if traveling through western Nevada and the Sierra on Sunday morning as roads will likely be slick. Conditions turn much colder early next week with overnight lows dipping into the teens for western Nevada by Tuesday night.
