Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City will offer two opportunities to learn about past holiday traditions and local history plus a unique full moon hike on Christmas Eve.

Northern Nevada Christmas Past will be a family-friendly, Christmas-themed slide show that covers past holiday traditions combined with local history from Virginia City, Fort Churchill, Buckland Station and other areas of Northern Nevada. Rangers will also discuss origins of holiday traditions, including Santa Claus, candy canes and Christmas trees.

This event will run twice, the first being Sunday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. and then again on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m.
It will be held at the Washoe Lake State Park office, 4855 Eastlake Boulevard. The event is free; however donations are appreciated to support future park programs.

Next up will be a Christmas Eve full moon hike. This is a moderate, one-mile round-trip hike to the gazebo on the Deadman’s Creek Trail. Participants should bring good shoes, water, a flashlight and dress for the weather. This program will last around one hour. Dogs are not permitted on this hike. This event is limited to 30 participants. This event begins at 5:30 p.m. Meet at the Maze parking lot. Turn left past the fee booth and it is the first parking lot on the right.

This event is also open to the public and free of charge; however, there is an entrance fee into the park of $7 per vehicle. Nevada residents receive a $2 discount.

Contact Kim Zuch at (775) 687-4319, or washoelake@hdiss.net to register.

Program schedules are subject to change due to weather and staffing. When going on any hike, please be sure to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate footwear. Washoe State Park is located at 4855 Eastlake Boulevard; take the Eastlake Boulevard Exit No. 44 from I-580.
