The following was submitted by a Carson High School student regarding Monday afternoon’s lockdown following a hoax 911 call to Carson City Dispatch.
Hello. My name is El, a student at Carson High School. After the school lockdown today, I thought about how it isn’t very common to hear a students perspective during a lockdown, and realized how important it is for us to be heard from our community during these scary moments.
Room 276, Musical Theatre.
We were practicing for a performance, And we were sitting according to Vocal Range
Up until the alarm rang
And we were quietly ushered into
Their storage room.
Hearts dropped and scary thoughts loomed Into our shaky hands and used up-
Voices asked what was going on,
But no one dared speak louder than
Than the steady directions on the intercom. Whispers and “shush!’s” where found
In every little sound.
Sounds always seem louder
When its supposed to be silent all around.
And so we sat there,
With hidden phones and reasurring faces Faced with the fact
That this type of thing
Is basic public school behavior.
Does this country expect children to be braver? It shouldn’t ever come to this,
Kids hugging each other for support,
Holding hands and searching emails
For reports and the latest update.
But we did nothing but wait.
Because what else could we do?
Locked devices in gray pouches kept us From texting our loved ones
One last possible, “I love you, too”
Or checking on friends in the other school Who had a lockdown near sierra blues. Those who had their phones
Hidden had the privilege of sharing
Small momentary pieces of reprieve,
But still we wondered,
“Will we ever leave?”
