The annual Carson City Community Thanksgiving dinner is happening today, Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Plaza Conference Center, 211 E. Ninth Street, Carson City.
Families and anyone who cannot afford a Thanksgiving meal, are invited to the feast, which includes a full turkey dinner, sides, desserts and a beverage. Turkeys are donated by the community and cooked up by The Bus Boy Mobile Cuisine along with other side dishes that round out this community Thanksgiving dinner.
With recent disruptions to food programs, individuals and families are experiencing greater need than ever. FISH has seen a significant rise in new clients since the onset of the government shutdown, and that increase has continued — even as some programs begin to come back online.
“The demand for support is higher than we’ve seen in years,” said Jim Peckham, executive director of Friends in Service Helping (FISH).
“At a time when food insecurity, housing instability, and financial hardship continue to impact local families, the annual dinner provides a warm, welcoming space where everyone can enjoy a hearty meal, fellowship, and a sense of belonging,” said Peckham.
It brings together volunteers, neighbors, and community partners to ensure no one has to face the holiday alone.
“By meeting immediate needs with compassion and dignity, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner reflects the heart of FISH’s mission: Caring for our community by feeding hope, connection and gratitude,” he said.
