The Carson City Fire Department is notifying residents that prescribed burning operations will take place throughout designated areas of the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) from Dec. 1, 2025 through February 2026.

These controlled burns are a critical part of the department’s proactive wildfire risk reduction strategy. The goal is to reduce hazardous vegetation, improve ecosystem health, and strengthen community protection ahead of future wildfire seasons. Carson City’s WUI zones are primarily located where the high-desert landscape meets the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west, and the grassy, sagebrush-covered areas to the north, east and southeast.

Smoke may be visible in and around the WUI areas of Carson City during planned pile burning activities. This is expected. Please do not report the smoke unless you see signs of an uncontrolled or active wildfire.

Residents with respiratory sensitivities are encouraged to take precautions when smoke is present. View helpful Smoke Management Tips here.

Prescribed burns are carefully planned and will be conducted by Wildland Engine Crew Members under specific weather and safety conditions. CCFD, Brush 54 Engine Crew will be on-site throughout operations to monitor conditions and ensure the burns remain within planned boundaries and will remain on scene to ensure hot spots are terminated.
