I met David, a Carson city resident, at United Blood services, now known as Vitalant, during its open house event Saturday at 256 E Winnie lane in the same shopping center as San Marcos Grill.

David was in a motorcycle accident in the 1980s that almost took his leg.

He said, “it took many bags of blood to save my leg, and my life.”

This is one of a couple reasons that David gives blood.

He says, “I also do it to help and give back to the community it’s kind of a civic duty.”

He believes more people should give blood because it’s important to prevent shortages.

“It really helps with your health,” says David.

They bring you in for a screening that checks for iron, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The process takes about an hour to make sure you have a safe experience.

It starts with an interview, then a 7-10 minute donation where you are hooked up, and finishes with a 15-minute stay to make sure you are feeling healthy and strong.

Come check out the Vitalant Open House until 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
