A 58 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday evening at 5:34 p.m. in the area of Panamint and Furnace Creek roads on multiple misdemeanor offenses, a Carson City Sheriff’s deputy reported, including a second-offense driving under the influence (DUI), hit-and-run, and a Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing (DAS) violation.
According to the report, Sheriff’s deputies were in the area of East Nye Lane and East College Parkway investigating a motor vehicle accident. A male was reported to have left the scene of the accident, reported last seen by witnesses as eastbound on Nye Lane.
A deputy eventually located the suspect, who was observed to be running from him as soon as he saw law enforcement, the report said. The suspect, though, only ran a short distance before stopping. The deputy caught up to the suspect and detained him in handcuffs.
The suspect smelled strongly of alcohol, the deputy reported, while displaying red, watery eyes and exhibiting slurred speech. When asked by the deputy if he required medical treatment, the suspect said yes, stating he had bumped his head.
Upon being read his Miranda rights, the suspect was asked by the deputy if he wanted to talk about the accident. The suspect replied, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Another deputy at the scene of the accident reported that the suspect had provided his driver’s license to the accident victim before running from the scene, the report said.
The victim had described the suspect, who matched the description when law enforcement made contact with him. The suspect refused to consent to standard field sobriety testing (FST). But he did provide a voluntary preliminary breath test (PBT), which the report said yielded breath-alcohol content of .088 percent.
The suspect was transported to the Carson City Jail, where he was booked without incident and an authorized search warrant was obtained for a blood draw. Carson City DAS added the probation violation to the suspect’s charges, because a condition of his release was not to consume or possess alcohol. Bail: $7,023.
