As students return to school Monday in Carson City and Douglas County, this week’s forecast begins with sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s followed by a warming trend through the week bringing hot weather in the upper 90s by Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Daytime highs in the Carson City area and surrounding counties are expected to be in the upper 80s Monday and then gradually warming to 90 Tuesday, low 90s on Wednesday, 95 on Thursday and highs Friday in the upper 90s, according NWS forecasters.

The warming and drying trend also comes with a monsoon pattern that may result in increased thunderstorm activity and heightened fire concerns late this week, forecasters note. Tuesday may see slight increase in the afternoon gusts, with ridges gusting 30 to 35 mph and valleys gusting 15 to 20 mph.

Showers and storms return to the Sierra and Sierra Front south of US-50 for Thursday, forecasters said. As the heat continues to build later in the week, by Friday there’s a chance for record temperatures in the region, forecasters said, mainly in the Reno and South Lake Tahoe areas. At the time of this writing, daytime highs Friday in Carson City will be near 97.

Carson City School District and Douglas County School District students begin class Monday. In Carson City, Kindergarten and pre-K begins Wednesday.
