Most cats come to Catmandu looking for a home; a few are simply hoping for a chance to survive. Will Feral was definitely in the second category.
As a frightened, semi-feral kitten in severe pain, Will was left in the overnight drop box at Washoe Regional Animal Control with a devastatingly broken back leg.
His injury was so severe that returning him to life on the streets wasn’t an option. With no rescue placement available, his future looked heartbreakingly uncertain.
Fortunately, Options Veterinary Clinic stepped in and asked if Catmandu could foster him while they evaluated his condition. Sadly, his x-rays revealed there was no saving his shattered leg. The only humane choice was amputation.
When Will returned to Catmandu as a three-legged kitten, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with people. He hissed. He swatted. He ran away. He made it perfectly clear that humans were not to be trusted.
But healing isn’t always just physical. Once the bodily pain ended, the emotional healing began.
With patience, kindness, and the security of knowing he was safe and would never have to fight to survive again, Will slowly began to change. The frightened little feral who once couldn’t be touched discovered that gentle hands could offer comfort instead of fear. Day by day, his walls came down.
Today, at not quite a year old, Will is one of Catmandu’s greatest success stories. This handsome young tripod not only gets around beautifully, but has blossomed into an affectionate cat who loves being petted, follows people around, enjoys curling up on laps, and delights in the company of other friendly cats. He isn’t special needs, he’s just special.
Will’s perfect home will be a little different from most. While he loves people now, being able to safely spend time outdoors remains very important to him. He’ll need a home where he can enjoy both indoor comforts and **SAFE **outdoor time, such as an enclosed patio or catio. He would also love to have another friendly feline companion to share his days with.
Will’s journey reminds us that labels don’t define a cat. “Feral” was never his destiny—it was simply where his story began. With love, patience, and a second chance, he became the wonderful companion he was always meant to be. Sometimes the cats who have had the hardest beginnings make the most grateful companions.
