
The next Carson City School Board meeting will take place Tuesday, July 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center locate at 851 E. William St.
Trustees will discuss an AI and head injury policies, strategic plan goals, teacher resignations and more.
— The Board will vote on the second reading of a new policy regarding the ethical use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The policy does not seek to ban AI entirely, but rather, acknowledges its benefits when used properly. It also places the decision-making about AI in the classroom onto educators. — Trustees will also vote on policy changes to the district’s policy on concussion and head injury management. These include clarifying changes as well as the addition of a requirement that employees and educators will need to complete annual training on prevention and treatment of head injuries. — Superintendent AJ Feuling will provide an informational update on the district’s strategic plan including the goals for the 2024 calendar year.
The trustees will see statistics on goal progress and achievement. Goals include:
— Return to pre-pandemic academic achievement by expanding multi-tiered systems of support to align instructional, mental health an behavioral resources and expectations for schools;
— Evaluate levels of student engagement and find opportunities to improve by supporting improvements in the understanding o the level of student engagement of schools through analyzing participation in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and;
— Continue to improve the supports and opportunities for students by fully filling staff positions district-wide and increasing the number of volunteers and community partners in schools.
— Proficiencies will also be discussed in Acing Accountability in Nevada. This is a platform created by the Governor’s office following the large infusion of funding that came from the 2023 Nevada Legislative session.
According to the agenda, the district has not yet received a request for this year’s data and “still have not received confirmation on some baseline data from 2022-23.” The Governor also allowed for districts to create an “innovative solution” metric for each district. The district submitted theirs in March but it has yet to be finalized.
While the packet includes goals, it does not include actual data from this past year. Whether or not the goals have been met is not known.
The 2023-24 goal set out for literacy growth for K-3 students was 65 percent, an increase from the base percentage of 41.1 percent in the 2022-23 school year.
For proficiency, the goal was 35 percent, up from 30 percent in the 22/23 school year.
For grades 4-8, growth goals for academic growth are 35.4 percent, up from 30.4 percent.
The proficiency goal for grades 4-8 in math was 36.4 percent, up from the actual 31.4 percent in the 22/23 school year.
The district set a goal of 75 percent of high school students being enrolled in at least one course unique to the College and Career Ready Diploma Requirements. The 22/23 baseline was 70.5 percent.
The rest of the categories do not contain goals or 22/23 data and include CCR proficiencies, AP enrollment, CTE enrollment, having fully licensed and certified staff, and more.
— Trustees will hear about staff numbers. Three new hires have been added to the district including a school psychologist, English teacher and 3rd Grade Teacher.
Six elementary school teachers resigned.
