Two men were arrested Saturday following an incident at a grocery store in which one of the suspects allegedly pushed an employee who attempted to stop them when they fled the store without paying for food items, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Following an investigation, CCSO arrested Nicholas Hale, 31, listed from Oregon, for suspicion of felony robbery and misdemeanor DUI. The second man, age 42, was booked for misdemeanor petit larceny, according to the report.
Deputies responded to the grocery store in the the 3600 block of North Carson Street for a larceny report. Dispatch advised two male subjects didn’t pay for items at the store and pushed or hit the manager on the way out. Dispatch advised that the subjects left the scene in a black vehicle with California plates.
Deputies met with the manager who stated two males came into the store, grabbed food items and then went to the self-checkout where their attitudes were described as aggressive and that they were being verbal with employees. They were asked to leave. The two men then walked out the front door with the food items without paying, the manager told deputies.
The manager went out the front door and tried to stop the two, when suspect Nicholas Hale used force and pushed the manager out of the way. The suspects continued to their car and drove away, westbound on College Parkway. The store manager provided a voided receipt of the food items, which amounted to $141.50 and stated they wished to press charges.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage of the incidence and observed the two men at the self-checkout grab the food items and walk out the front doors without providing payment. The video does not show where suspect Hale is alleged to have shoved the employee as it was right out the front door, where they did not have surveillance, the report states.
While collecting video evidence, a CCSO detective conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The report notes that earlier, when walking out of the supermarket, officers located a 8-percent alcohol content White Claw in the parking space where the suspect vehicle was parked earlier.
The deputy investigating went to the location of the traffic stop. Both suspects were identified as the same in the surveillance footage, the report states. Food items from the supermarket were located in the vehicle.
Deputies observed the driver, Hale, had a heavy odor of alcohol. He consented to standardized field sobriety testing and stated he did drink a White Claw four hours prior to contact. He provided a PBT of .116. He also stated he smoked half of a joint, the report states.
Hale was arrested for robbery, after allegedly taking the food items and then pushing the manager out of the way with force. He was also booked for suspicion of DUI. Bail for Hale: $25,000. The other man was booked for suspicion of misdemeanor petit larceny. His bail was $250.
In other arrests:
— A 56-year-old woman was arrested July 4, 4:40 p.m. for suspicion of gross misdemeanor possession of a dangerous weapon (brass knuckles) and possession of drug paraphernalia. A 57-year-old Carson City man was also arrested for suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail for the woman, $3,137. Bail for the man, $1,137. A traffic stop for expired registration and subsequent investigation led to the arrests.
— A 24-year-old Reno woman was arrested at 2:15 a.m. July 4 for suspicion of DUI. According to the booking report, deputies responded to a Westwood Drive address for a white sedan in the reporting party’s yard with its hazard lights on.
Deputies arrived and located the vehicle parked in the yard. The vehicle had not crashed into anything. The deputy observed an intoxicated female passenger in the seat.
A short time later the suspect approached the deputy and advised she was the driver of the vehicle. The driver had slurred speech, red watery eyes and an odor of alcohol coming from her person. She was asked if she had been consuming alcohol. She said she had and informed deputies she had consumed several Jello shots. She agreed to field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. She provided a preliminary breath test of .171 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail she provided evidentiary breath samples of .143 and .130. Bail: $1,137.
— A 20-year-old man was arrested July 4, 3:32 a.m. for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and reckless driving. According to the booking report, a deputy paced a vehicle going 70 mph in a 35 mph zone and attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect vehicle appeared to accelerate and then swerved, nearly striking another vehicle. The vehicle continued and then came to a stop at the intersection of South Carson and Clearview at a red light. The vehicle then turned into a store parking lot where it came to a stop.
When the driver exited the vehicle he was asked by a deputy why he had been driving at such a high rate of speed. The man stated he wanted to do a “pull” and was telling his friend to watch, the report states.
The deputy asked if he had been drinking. The driver claimed he had not been drinking. He then said he had been drinking the night before and had slept, the report states.
He was placed under arrest for reckless driving. He was read his Miranda warning and agreed to speak. The officer said it was their belief he was driving under the influence. The deputy requested he participate in standardized field sobriety tests. The man consented to the tests and showed clues of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .148. Bail: $2,030.
— A 27-year-old man was arrested July 3 for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $10,000 cash.
— A 37-year-old Carson City woman, Courtney Avery, was arrested July 4, 2:12 p.m. for suspicion of felony fraudulent use of a credit or debit card with intent to defraud, misdemeanor petit larceny and a misdemeanor warrant alleging violation of conditions.
According to the booking report deputies responded to a East William Street address for a report of a fraud and made contact with the business, learning the following.
The victim stated he was at a downtown Carson City bar on July 2 having drinks and at some point during the night he lost his debit card. He stated he wasn’t sure where or how he lost his card. He stated he checked his bank account on July 4 and observed money was missing from his account. He observed $37.65 and $35.50 had been used at a vape store and also observed $31.19 was used at a liquor store. He stated he contacted the bank to have his card blocked. He stated he contacted the owner of the vape store and they were reviewing camera footage. The victim provided a statement.
Deputies continued the investigation, met with the owner of the vape store, which led to the suspect being identified and resulted in the subsequent arrest. Bail: $5,000.
— A 47-year-old Carson City woman was arrested July 3, 11:01 p.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant. Bail out of Carson City Justice Court: $500.
— A 36-year-old Sparks woman was arrested July 2, 10:12 p.m. for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and open container. According to the booking report, deputies were called to a Fleischmann Way rehab facility for a possible drunk driver. Dispatch said employees said a female driving a black SUV called the facility to receive treatment and when staff walked outside they observed her driving westbound. The reporting party stated the female had thick slurred speech and said she was drinking in the parking lot.
Deputies arrived and met with the woman who was sitting in the passenger side of the SUV. She stepped out of the vehicle and was unsteady on her feet. She asked if she could go inside. The deputy spoke with the woman and could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person, the report states.
She told the deputy she had drove from Reno to go to rehab. She stated she began drinking in her car before getting admitted into the facility. She said she got lost and didn’t think she was at the right building so she drove around the block, the report states.
The deputy asked if she was willing to submit to field sobriety tests. The woman agreed and advised she said she had a stroke two weeks prior and due to the stroke the left side of her body did not move. She submitted to a preliminary breath test with a result of .251 and was arrested. At jail she consented to a breath test. Bail: $1,379.
— A 49-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for a warrant for violation of conditions and possession of drug paraphernalia. A 38-year-old Silver Springs man was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. No-bail hold for the woman in lieu of hearing and bail for the man was $2,500.
— A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested July 2 for a misdemeanor warrant out of Douglas County. Bail: $3,000 cash.
— A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested July 5 for a misdemeanor warrant. Bail: $250.
— A 31-year-old Carson City woman was arrested July 5, 4:52 p.m. for suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery. According to the booking report, a deputy was dispatched to an Urgent Care center for a report of domestic battery between the woman and her husband.
Deputies contacted the man who advised that he and his wife had a verbal altercation due to the divorce in the works. He stated the woman followed him into the kitchen, where she picked up a large speaker and threw it at him, hitting his arm, according to the report. He stated that he left the residence without further incident. The deputy noticed a small red mark on the man’s right elbow.
A deputy made contact with the woman who stated there was an argument and that she “blacked out.” She stated that she then picked up the speaker, which was located in the kitchen area, and threw it, striking the man in the arm. She was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery. Bail: $3,137.
— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested July 3, 6:43 a.m. for suspicion of DUI. According to the booking report, deputies were called to the area of South Curry and West Second for a possible intoxicated driver. Deputies were advised the suspect was sleeping in his car while it was running with his seat upright in a position where he was able to drive.
Deputies made contact with the man who advised he was intoxicated and slept in his car. He said he was at the bar with a friend and later gave his friend a ride home. He said he drove to the location parked his car and slept. While speaking, the deputy could smell an odor of alcohol coming from his person and observed the man’s driver seat was upright in a position where he would have been able to drive, the report states.
The man refused to perform the field sobriety test, stating that he would not pass because he was intoxicated. He consented to a preliminary breath test with a result of .159, the report states. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI and consented to an evidentiary breath test. Bail: $1,137.
— A 56-year-old Carson City woman was arrested July 3 for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail; $2,500.
— A 26-year-old Carson City woman was arrested July 3, 1:44 a.m. for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $2,500.
