An afternoon of spinning wheels and the pull of gravity was met with kicks, thrills and even a few spills as part of a first-time July 4 holiday event in Carson City — a youth soap box derby — hosted by Nevada Day Inc. and Galaxy Theatre.

Following the Freedom Cruise America 250 celebration where adults loaded up their classic cars, tricked out trucks and motorcycles for a patriotic-themed parade from North Carson Street to Carson Tahoe Hospital, the youth had their chance to shine too, bringing their creativity and ingenuity to build on gravity and inertia from the Galaxy Theatre parking lot, which served as the raceway as well as the start and finish line.

As young soap box racers took the driver’s seat and received a firm push-off from friends and family members, it was all down hill for them, with bales of hay serving as perfect safety stops along the track.

Some riders made it all the way down the track without spilling, while some collided with the hay bales halfway down the track (see video) but most made it all the way down without any mishaps.
