UPDATE: The case has been adjudicated and pled down to misdemeanor. A 30-year-old Lake Tahoe man and a 33-year-old Reno man were arrested following a traffic stop for possession of drugs and paraphernalia.
Thursday evening, deputies were traveling east on Winnie Lane when they observed a driver of a vehicle looking down towards the floorboard, acting distracted. In addition, the rear license plate was obstructed with a black-tinted plastic cover, and deputies initiated a traffic stop.
Inside the vehicle, deputies made contact with the owner of the vehicle, and the Lake Tahoe driver.
Deputies asked the owner for the vehicle’s registration, at which point he opened the glove box which appeared to have a black handgun inside. Deputies ordered the man not to touch the weapon, at which point, the man grabbed the gun by the grip and told deputies it was a BB gun. He set it down again before reaching for it a second time, at which point deputies told him again not to touch it.
An additional unit was ordered along with a K9 unit, and deputies removed the two men from the vehicle and detained them. They confirmed the gun was a BB gun and separated the men.
While speaking with the men, the Lake Tahoe driver told deputies he was on probation out of California. Deputies attempted to contact the probation officer but could not reach them.
K-9 Deputy Blue arrived on scene and conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle, resulting in an alert.
The man advised deputies to “be careful” of the center console because he had hypodermic needles and a “point” without being asked.
Inside the vehicle, deputies located:
A glass pipe inside a paper bag in the center console
A piece of cellophane with suspected methamphetamine residue inside the passenger-side door
A white hose with black electrical tape wrapped around the end under the driver’s seat
A glass pipe with black burn marks on it under the driver’s seat
A second glass pipe in the center console
At the scene, on the man’s person deputies also located three hypodermic needles and later at the jail deputies also located methamphetamine in one of his shoes.
The two were taken into custody without incident.
The Lake Tahoe man was booked on possession of drug paraphernalia and improper display of license plates, both misdemeanors.
Bail: $1,209
