Rising temperatures and rapid snow melt has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a flood warning for the main stem of the Walker Rivers in Lyon County, which includes Mason Valley, Yerington and Wabuska.

According to the weather service and CarsonWeather.com, snowmelt on the Walker River Basin has required large releases from Bridgeport and Topaz lakes on the east and west forks. These releases will cause the main stems of the rivers ro rise significantly through next week. Flooding is expected by Sunday afternoon in the Mason/Yerington areas and by Monday morning in the Wabuska area. Minor to moderate flooding of lowlands, pasture and crop land of some of the rural roads is expected.

The highest flows of the melt season on the Walker River Basin are expected between Thursday, June 16 and Saturday, June 25. There will be a higher threat of flooding on the Walker River and its tributaries during this period, according to the weather service.

The weather service advises people to not recreate on the rivers and streams in the Eastern Sierra. The water is rising fast, is extremely swift and is cold Vehicles should not drive through flooded areas as the fast moving water can sweep vehicles away.
