A 26-year-old woman and 31-year-old man were arrested Friday, May 1 for suspicion of felony child abuse with substantial bodily harm after the mother of an 8-month-old told deputies she shook their baby and threw it against a wall, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

According to the booking report, on April 30 at 10:30 p.m. deputies were sent to Carson Tahoe Hospital to meet with patrol deputies who were called out by ER staff for an 8-month old infant that had skull fractures that were inconsistent and changing from the parents account of the baby slipping out of the mother’s hand and falling into a bassinet.
The hospital advised the baby had serious injuries and was to be flown by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center for traumatic medical care due to having a skull fracture and bleeding in the brain, the report states.
On arrival deputies spoke with the two suspects separate. The female suspect said the child had thrown up twice and while she was holding him, her wrist gave out and he slipped out of her hand and into the bassinet in their studio apartment at Frontier Motel.
A deputy spoke with the man who said that he was arguing with the woman and had left the apartment to go get cigarettes and unwind from having a verbal argument with the woman. While out he said the woman told him over the phone that something was wrong with the baby, the report states.
He said he got back home in 6 minutes and that he put cold water on the baby to help him from overheating or possibly having a seizure. He told deputies that after a short time at home, they decided to drive to the hospital, where he said he drove at a high rate of speed, his car going over 100 mph. He said they drove to the hospital as it would be quicker than calling and waiting for an ambulance, the report states.
Detectives met with patrol units at the motel where a search warrant was requested and granted to search the motel room and the sedan the man drove to the hospital. After searching the vehicle at the hospital, the woman informed a deputy she had a handgun hidden in the dresser on her side of the bed which the man was unaware of and did not know about as he is not allowed to be around firearms after spending time in prison, the report states.
Officers met with detectives at the motel who had taken photos and located the handgun. The condition of the studio was extremely poor and the floors were sticky, with countless flies flying around throughout the apartment and there was a strong odor from garbage piled throughout the studio. The woman re-created for deputies how the baby fell out of her hands and completed a written statement.
On Friday, May 1, deputies were made aware that the baby had multiple head injuries and that the injuries appeared non-accidental in nature and that the baby was still in the pediatric intensive care unit pending an MRI scan.
Deputies also received information from CTH nurse notes indicating the mother was inconsistent about the baby’s method of falling. Another note advised a technician who was going to go to the ER room overhead the woman stating “nothing is set in stone” with the man replying in a firm, loud voice “don’t you fucking say anything,” the report states.
On Friday, officers met with the Division of Child and Family Services at the Frontier Motel as they needed to conduct a walkthrough of the apartment for assessment of the living conditions. While at the apartment a deputy asked the female suspect if she would come to the station so they could go over the medical information that was obtained. The female suspect agreed and she was taken to the sheriff’s office for an interview, the report states. The male suspect had to put their two dogs away and later came down to the station.
While conducting the interview with the female suspect, she admitted that she and the man bought the handgun in August 2025 to protect their dogs from coyotes while they were living in Silver Springs. She also stated she was having suicidal thoughts about two months ago and asked the male suspect to move the gun somewhere else in the apartment away from her.
She admitted that she had been having postpartum issues and that after arguing with the male suspect, the baby was crying and wouldn’t stop. She told officers she was getting frustrated over the baby crying and wiggling around. She said while holding him and getting more frustrated, her grip on the baby tightened and she started shaking him. While shaking him she said the base of the back of his skull hit the top of the bassinet causing the baby to cry more, the report states. She said she then threw the baby toward the wall where he hit the wall, then fell to the ground. She said she heard a loud thud and the baby stopped crying, the report states.
