The Arrowhead 4-H Livestock Club in Carson City has members currently raising sheep and pigs for this year’s Nevada Junior Livestock Show. The members with a total of 4 available lambs to purchase are Anna Shane, Gracie Shane, and Grace Dooley.
The members with a total of 5 available pigs are Gloria Dooley, John Dooley, Ada Dooley, Lily VanHorn, and Jacob VanHorn. They are looking for buyers that would be interested in purchasing a locally-raised meat product for their freezers.
If anyone is interested, they can contact the Carson-Storey 4-H Office at 775-887-2252. The club is also raffling off two turkeys that the members have been raising. The birds will be freezer-ready and delivered to the winners shortly after the livestock show. Tickets can be purchased from club members by calling the 4-H office. Tickets are $5 each, or 5 tickets for $20.
The Nevada Junior Livestock Show will take place May 7-11, 2025 and the sale will commence at 3:30pm, May 10th at the Reno Livestock Events Center. Anyone is welcome to attend the show and sale to support local youth!
The meetings for the Arrowhead 4-H Livestock Club happen every month where they learn to improve their skills to appropriately take care of their projects. During one of these meetings, the Nevada Division of Wildlife presented about keeping their livestock safe from bears and other predators in the area. The club also attended a workshop at Carson Valley Meats, which showed the cut and wrap process. The Artisan & AG Fair is another chance for anyone to find out more about the 4-H club. This fair takes place at Carson Valley Meats during December, and allows local food and craft vendors to sell their products.
While raising these market animals, the members have learned many valuable skills including responsibility, and respect for their project and its purpose. Other skills include patience and leadership, which must be used in a show setting. Members also learn to keep business records and develop budgets.
The Nevada Junior Livestock Show offers a Youth Advisory Council that teaches the youth at the show leadership skills and how to help other youth at the show. To participate in the show, the members of the club must learn how to wash their animals, and if they have lambs, how to shear them. They also must learn how to present their animals in a way that is appealing to a judge, as well as present themselves in the same manner.
The Arrowhead 4-H Livestock Club invites you to come to the Nevada Junior Livestock Show and Sale and help sponsor the youth involved in food production in Nevada!
