Tuesday morning brought several people out to watch the dome being placed onto the top of the Nevada State Capitol’s Legislature Building in Carson City.

With slight rain and some light winds, crews were able to hoist the 5,000 pound dome onto the capitol building complex with no problems.

Curious watchers lined up along South Carson Street to view the crane moving and the final dome topping.

Among them was Michele Burke, a 44-year resident of Carson City who came out to see the historic event.

“I just love to see the building come together,” she said. Burke had worked at the Nevada Legislature before as did her husband who was with the Legislative Counsel Bureau for the course of his career.

“It is a wonderful process. The building looks so beautiful now. It’s a wonderful building to represent our state,” she said, explaining that the building is actually the Nevada State Capitol, which also is home to the Nevada State Legislature. She said it is often misunderstood.

“This is the actual capitol because the actual capitol is where the legislature is seated and this is where our legislature meets,” she said. “The other building, the old capitol, is where we used to meet and that’s where the legislature met. Now we are over here. This is the capitol building for the state.”

Howard Riedl, a retired civil engineer, learned about the dome going up and began watching beginning around 7 a.m. in front of Comma Coffee.

“I’m here to see the topping of the legislative building project. It’s always unique to see a building being completed when they top it out and this is it. It’s the dome,” he said.
