At their April meeting, the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn about Dr. Josh Bonde’s work to identify the dinosaurs that once resided in Nevada. He has participated in, and led a number of digs to find and identify some of Nevada’s early residents. Bonde is the director of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum in Carson City.
Bonde is a born and raised Nevadan and proud member of the Te-Moak Band of Western Shoshone from the Fallon area. He received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno, his M.S. in Earth Sciences from Montana State University-Bozeman, and his Ph.D. From the University of Nevada, Reno. He is currently the Director at the Nevada State Museum.
Dr. Bonde is passionate about educational outreach and telling the stories of all Nevadans. A geologist and paleontologist by profession, Dr. Bonde and his colleagues recently described the first dinosaur species unique to Nevada — a small two-legged plant eating animal named Nevadadromeus schmitti.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature. Its motto of “Let knowledge grow from more to more” comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.
Information on joining the organization or on the reservations for the Thursday, April 17 dinner/meeting can be obtained by calling 775.302.8820 or by email to lhcreservations@gmail.com.
