A winter storm has moved into Carson City and surrounding counties Tuesday, closing state offices, schools, colleges and causing a few fender benders in the capital City.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Carson City, Carson Valley, Washoe and Storey counties through Wednesday morning. Forecasters say to expect anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow possible on the valley floors, and anywhere from 8 to 16 inches in the foothills.

Snow at Lake Tahoe will bring anywhere from 1 to 3 feet at lake level and Sierra valleys, while the higher Sierra ridges could get anywhere from 3 to 5 feet. Chains and snow tires are required over all mountain passes in the Sierra.

Road conditions are messy as the brunt of the storm moves into the region. In Carson City there’s been a few fender-benders, but nothing serious. Carson City Public Works is out with their plows removing snow from local streets as is NDOT with their plows hitting I-580, US-395 and US-50 East and US-50 West.

Slick road conditions will persist throughout the day and during the Tuesday evening commute. For the latest travel information, see NVRoads.com.

The most impactful part of the winter storm arrives this morning and continues through tonight, with travel highly discouraged in the Sierra as periods of whiteout conditions are likely, according to the weather service.

Snow and gusty winds move into western Nevada valleys by mid morning and peak Tuesday afternoon and evening, producing several inches of snowfall with hazardous travel for the evening commute, NWS forecasters said.

Cold conditions and scattered snow showers will keep roads slick through the Wednesday morning commute, with another round of snow looking more likely by Thursday, according to the weather service.
