A 34-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for multiple alleged felony offenses following an early morning drive-by shooting at a Carson City home, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Zachary Leo Vereschagin, listed of Gardnerville, was taken into custody in Douglas County following an investigation and then to Carson City Jail. He was booked for 10 alleged felony offenses including suspicion of aggravated stalking constituting domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of firearm at a home and vehicle, disregard for safety of person or property with death or substantial bodily harm and child abuse or neglect.
On Tuesday at around 4:39 a.m. it was reported that approximately four shots were fired into a home in the 1300 block of Kingsley Lane in Carson City.
Deputies arrived on scene and located spent shell casings and bullet holes in the home, fragments of projectiles and bullet holes in a vehicle parked in front of the residence.
According to the booking report, the victim had made a report the previous day that her ex-boyfriend, Zachary Vereschagin, had texted her saying he was going to kill her new boyfriend. The text conversation was document by CCSO, the report states.
The text conversation threatened to come by the residence at night to shoot at it and to commit murder. The suspect expressed he didn’t care about going to prison and repeatedly threatened to kill (name redacted). He told the ex-girlfriend she should be scared and wrote “Want your fantasy!!! Here it is. It’s coming!!!” and wrote there was a “Bounty” on (redacted name), according to the report.
A deputy located security camera footage that showed a white van traveling east on Kingsley and the vehicle is then located on traffic cameras turning south onto Hillview from Kingsley at 4:37 a.m. and turning south onto Carson Street at 4:40 a.m.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate the vehicle in Gardnerville. Deputies knocked on the door and were invited inside while the suspect was sleeping on the couch, the report states.
He woke up and spoke to a deputy briefly, saying he had been sleeping on the couch all night and that his cell phone had been with him the whole night, the report states. He provided his phone to show his last text, in which he texted the victim asking her why his family was being harassed by the sheriff’s office, the report states.
The deputy asked about the texts that had been deleted and he said that they had been about his disapproval of the victim’s new boyfriend, and arranging for her to pick up her belongings from his apartment. He sent her a few songs (My Chemical Romance was the music video he had sent her), the report states.
The suspect said that he had made some threats through text. At this point he was placed under arrest for aggravated stalking. He provided a gunshot residue kit sample, which provided a presumptive positive result, the report states.
The suspect was taken by Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to the Carson City Jail where officers met with him after collecting his shoes. His shoes have a distinct pattern on the bottom with “DC” on the heel. The prints were located outside the white Chevy Venture, the report states.
At Carson City Jail he was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak. He confessed to sending threatening texts to the victim and threatening to come to the residence to use a gun and threatened to kill (redacted name). He then admitted to circling the block that morning and shooting an unknown number of times at the house, the report states.
The suspect said he had been emotional and he apologized for endangering the occupants of the house. He said if the kids were in front of him he would say that he was sorry and (doesn’t) deserve to be a part of their lives, the report states.
In the home at the time of the shooting were two children and four adults. One child was sleeping in the living room where a bullet had impacted the ceiling above where he was sleeping, the report states.
