A weather system moving into the region Tuesday is expected to bring valley rain and light snow showers, with accumulating snow around Lake Tahoe prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra.

While the storm will be shorter in length and far less snow than last week’s atmospheric river system, forecasters say travel impacts such as snowy, slick roads are expected for the Lake Tahoe area, the Sierra and into Mono County.

The Winter Weather Advisory is from is from 10 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say to expect total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches around lake level, 6 to 14 inches above 7,000 feet, and winds gusting as high as 90 mph across Sierra ridges.

Foothill locations in western Nevada could get light snowfall above 5,500 feet, according to the weather service.

For the Carson City area, there’s a 50 percent chance of rain Tuesday, a 50 percent chance of rain or snow showers Tuesday night and a 30 percent chance of snow Wednesday morning. The weather service advises that snowfall, even if it is light, can cause travel delays, especially during commute times.

Forecasters say after Wednesday, a high pressure ridge will build thus keeping storms away from the California coast. Look for temperatures to warm up Friday and through the weekend to above average, with highs into the 50s by Saturday and Sunday.
