With winter weather again coming to the Carson City area and the expectation of wind, rain and snow, chances are the storm will lead to hazardous driving conditions. This in turn can lead to car crashes. Planning ahead will help prevent these crashes. Slow down, leave early and drive with care.

If traveling, check the road conditions along your route and abide by the restrictions. We may feel that we absolutely have to get there but, is it worth the risk of injury or even death in the event of a crash? Before driving contact NDOT at 877-NV-ROADS or Caltrans at 800-427-7623 or for current requirements. You can also go the website here for the latest conditions.

Should you decide to travel, make sure that you and your passengers are wearing your seatbelts securely before the vehicle moves. If travelling with children remember that any child less than 6 years of age who weighs less than 60 pounds must ride in an approved child restraint system. (NRS 484B.157)

Keep an emergency kit handy with blankets, first aid kit, water, food, etc. just in case something happens that keeps you stranded for a while. Be sure your cell phones are charged up and carry an extra battery just in case. Let loved ones know your route and when you expect to arrive.

By planning ahead, preparing for the unexpected, keeping others informed and driving slowly and with care, you increase the chances of making it to your destination without issue.
