Three local educators were recently recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for their outstanding commitment to citizenship education, earning the distinction of VFW Citizenship Education Teacher.
Ryan Mick, special education teacher at Fremont Elementary, Kayleigh Robinson, fourth-grade teacher at Empire Elementary and Tanya Watts, Pre-K teacher at Fritsch Elementary School, were awarded the honors.
Presented annually, the VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award recognizes teachers who go above and beyond to instill an understanding of American values, democratic principles, civic responsibility, patriotism, flag etiquette and the responsibilities of citizenship. Honorees are selected based on their classroom instruction, community involvement and efforts to help students understand the importance of service and civic engagement.
Through lessons, discussions and hands-on activities, the recognized teachers help students develop an appreciation for the freedoms they enjoy and the responsibilities that come with them. Their efforts align with the VFW’s mission to ensure future generations understand the significance of citizenship and service.
