Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. On a recent Saturday night I went to see the James Bond classic Goldfinger at Carson Stadium Cinemas, 2571 N Carson St. I'd seen that movie when it was released in 1964, and I have the DVD as part of a boxed set of James Bond films, but I was thrilled when it appeared on the marquee because there is nothing like seeing a movie made for the big screen on an actual big screen.

The Brewery Arts Center received special permission to screen “Once upon a Main Street”, the new Lifetime movie shot at the Brewery Arts Center along with several locations in Carson City and Carson Valley.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

On the agenda for discussion includes an increase in water rates, the replacement of 32 city vehicles, water purchases and more.

Proscenium Players, Carson City’s longest running theater company is casting for voice actors in the production of an original radio drama “Secrets of Harridge House” with 13 episodes. The premiere broadcast is scheduled for this fall and multiple seasons are planned.

Historic Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada, is opening its doors once again for what it was meant to be — a performing arts venue. “Murder at the Gin Joint” premiers this August and is a murder mystery presented by the Piper’s Players.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is used to building big Broadway productions this time of year, generally drawing from 6,000 to more than 7,000 people from 20 states and Canada. But there’s a bit of a problem.

The Brewery Arts Center normally provides the Levitt-Amp concert series throughout the summer, but due to COVID-19 the festivities were cancelled this year. The BAC, however, along with several Carson City community partners, stepped up to bring safe family fun to the capital city, including the Flatbed Concert Series and drive-in movie nights.

Construction of Mountain Lakes Estates Retirement Community is nearly complete, and its first residents are expected to move in this fall, said Darryl Fisher, president of Mission Senior Living. Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the awards for Nevada Humanities CARES: Emergency Relief Grants for Nevada Humanities and Cultural Organizations. Forty-six cultural and humanities organizations across Nevada received $368,873 in federal CARES Act grants.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — The Resident Artist Program in Silver City announced that their summer visiting artist is Kerry Rossow, an Illinois-based author, performer, and co-founder of the She Said Project.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council has issued $392,250 in federal funds to 79 arts organizations through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Grant amounts ranged from $1,000 to $10,000, based on each group’s total annual revenue.

I recently watched the critically acclaimed and award-winning 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan" on television the other evening.

I'm not a combat veteran, or a military veteran of any stripe for that matter, and that movie still gives me chills each time I see it.

I believed it when some veterans reported experiencing emotional flashbacks while viewing "Saving Private Ryan" on the big screen. The film's combat scenes were so disturbing that they triggered post-traumatic stress reactions from those who had lived through the real thing.
